The famous Buffalo, NY sandwich. Slow-roasted seasoned roast beef, sliced thin and piled high between a kummelweck roll  (we get our rolls from Costanzo’s Bakery in Buffalo and we make the wecks in house). Tender corned beef on buttered and grilled marble rye with Swiss, sauerkraut and dressing. Sweet Vidalia onions deeply caramelized in beef stock and beer until they are thick and gooey, then we bake Gruyere cheese on top until bubbly. Ground in house from Ribeye, Strip and Sirloin for a thick and juicy flavorful experience. After a pretty long absence, recently went with a friend for lunch and was very pleased!

Bite-sized shrimp flash fried, tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce, dusted with coconut, sesame seeds, and green onion. Exclusively from Buffalo, NY; the city’s favorite for 150 years. A blend of beef and pork in a natural casing that crisps when grilled.

The mussels were delicious as was the cheese steak. You must try the onion rings they are off the chart!! Service was a little slow but we were not in any rush and our server was great with recommendations and conversation! Glad we gave it another try and will definitely be back. All natural, grass-fed bison is a healthy sustainable choice with a slightly milder flavor than beef. Bone-in Heritage Cheshire center cut chop, dry rubbed, then grilled over an open flame.

Blanketed with prosciutto, fresh asparagus and smoked gouda cheese. Pasture raised on the lush mountain grasses around Asheville, NC. Their special Black Angus-Swiss Braunveih breed of cattle offers superior marbling, flavor and tenderness. Seared and glazed with a teriyaki sauce, crusted with toasted sesame seeds and served with a cucumber salad and cucumber-wasabi sauce. We get our Mahi from a smoke house in Pompano and then blend it with simple ingredients to give it a little kick. Served with an assortment of relishes and crackers.

The most common way to get the North Star tattoo inked on your skin is in black and grey. It’s a borderline minimalist design yet it looks very complex in these colors. It’s actually grown a lot in popularity in recent years because of its simple yet interesting look. After talking about wrapping your arm with stars, let’s move up to the chest.

The Celestial Beauty and Symbolism of the North Star

It can be someone who is currently in the military or a retired military member. In fact, some people will get their North Star tattoo designs to honor a family member who was in the Navy. Some people will get their North Star tattoos to show that they are sailors. Anyone that works on the water knows how important the North Star can be and most people recognize its significance when they see it on someone’s skin. This is an especially great idea for anyone who has a job on a ship, though it can also work for anyone who is regularly out on their boat.

DO YOU TRAVEL TO DO TATTOOS?

Pater Oakmund Madsen is a highly qualified Viking and Nordic tattoo artist and is recommendable to anyone. Sometimes, he adds a bit of red or green ink, just a little, to add some variety to his tattoos. In order to accentuate the Norse tattoo symbols, she uses a lot of thick decorative lines, or knot tattoos, which weave in and out of one another in asymmetrical patterns.

Q: What is the historical importance of North Star tattoos?

The stars are in different sizes and they get smaller down to the neck. This black tattoo is a great idea to combine multiple stars in an arranged design. If you want to combine two different types of tattoo techniques in one design, this inner wrist tattoo is for you! A shadowy dotwork technique gives the appearance of a shooting star around a small, thick star.

You cannot fail with a vibrant logo for San Francisco, Los Angeles or San Diego. She has worked in digital media for over five years and is an expert on a range of topics, including tattoos, piercings, and culture. Her work can be seen across the web on Backstage Magazine, Merry Jane, Vulture, and more. However, it is important to note that aesthetically, these are cool-looking tattoos.

It’s possible for individuals with Filipino heritage to get a golden sun tattoo with eight points and three golden stars with five points, which are featured on the Philippine flag. Plus, you don’t have to have this heritage to get this amazing tattoo. It is believed that seeing a shooting star in person brings good luck. Similarly, having a tattoo of a shooting star could signify that the individual adorned with it will be fortunate. This tattoo of a star consists of only a few lines, and the fewer the lines used, the less realistic it may appear. Nevertheless, with only four uncomplicated lines and dotted accents, this ultra-minimal design effectively brings the basic shapes to life as a star.

The placement of a North Star tattoo can also convey additional meanings. For example, a North Star tattoo on the wrist or forearm can serve as a constant reminder of one’s guiding principles and true path. A North Star tattoo on the back or shoulder can symbolize the idea of looking to the future and moving forward with confidence. A North Star tattoo on the ankle or foot can represent the idea of grounding oneself and staying connected to the earth.

For the lovers of the ultra-minimal, rather than getting a cluster of stars inked, it may make more sense to spread out a bunch of super-small stars. Here, the stars are so small they almost look like freckles (also due in part to the red ink). If you like the look of bold stars but don’t want to use heavy blackwork or vivid colors, ink them with a faux thick outline. These stars mimic the look of a heavy outline by creating a smaller star within the larger star, but it manages to stay light by forgoing the black ink.

What is the meaning behind the nautical star tattoo?

Avoid sun exposure, swimming, and heavy exercise for a few weeks after getting the tattoo, as these can all interfere with the healing process. Tattoo pain varies from person to person and depends on individual pain tolerance. The pain level for a North Star tattoo is generally considered mild to moderate, as it is usually a smaller design. However, areas with thinner skin or closer to bones may be slightly more sensitive. If you are looking for a small symbol to represent protection, then you should definitely consider getting the North Star tattoo.

Some of these tattoo artists actually specialize in medium to small-sized tattoos. Most Viking and Nordic tattoo artists do large works that fill entire backs, or sleeves that turn into chest tattoos. As far as the idea of navigation goes, both spiritually and literally, the most direct symbolic representation is the nautical star. The notion of stars as symbols of hope comes from the fact that they offer bright points of light among the blackness of the night sky.

It also happens to be one of the oldest tattoos around since people have been using the star for centuries to move around the planet. Red star tattoos pack a big punch with their bold color and links to communism. You can rock this vibrant design anywhere on your body–think shoulders, biceps, or even behind the ear for a surprise pop of color.

A North Star tattoo is more than just body art; it’s a permanent reminder of your personal journey. As life unfolds, the tattoo’s significance may evolve, serving as a constant companion on your path. According to a study by the National Library of Medicine, individuals with meaningful tattoos often experience a sense of empowerment and self-expression. It is said that the north star can help guide us towards our true purpose in life, helping us to find our unique place in the world. When you wear a north star tattoo, you are declaring your commitment to discovering your true path and living your life with purpose and meaning.

Moving from the blend of celestial bodies in a sun and star tattoo, let’s explore something simple yet striking. They’re cool for anyone looking to make a subtle statement without going overboard. This kind of tattoo can be more than just art; it’s like carrying a piece of your spirit and history with you every day. Getting inked with the Star of David could be empowering, reminding you of your strength and inspiration wherever life takes you.

This scene is much different than the highly patterned tattoos we have seen so far which are all tied up in knots. He specializes in sleeves that transform into chest tattoos, as well as large back pieces. These rectangles and squares contain runes, Nordic monsters, Celtic knots, and other Nordic and Viking symbols. Walhalla Ink’s tattoos are highly intricate and complicated in their nature. Cedric’s tattoos are wonderful representations of Viking and Nordic tattoos. Among these different tattoo motifs, Cedric uses runes, and in one such tattoo, he had a background of shaded oblivion with the runes contained within a white space.

Remember that your north star tattoo represents the power within yourself to find your own guiding light. By personalizing your design and choosing a placement that holds meaning to you, you can create a unique and powerful reminder to stay true to yourself and believe in your abilities. When you wear a north star tattoo, you are symbolically aligning yourself with the guiding light that has been used by people for centuries.

Maya was a high school senior when her best friend, Aubrey, mysteriously dropped dead in front of the older man named Frank whom they’d been spending time with all summer. After the tragedy, Maya drowns herself in alcohol and drugs to numb the pain. At first, the story felt disjointed, and I wasn’t really sure what Maya’s father’s book had to do with the story at all.

Category: Suspense & Thriller Women's Fiction Audiobooks

I will say, unlike other thrillers, it doesn’t go on and on about that aspect but it’s still present throughout the novel so that did take away from the story a bit for me. While not a perfect story, there’s actually quite a bit of depth and I was so interested in where the story would go. I truly had no idea and just went along for the ride. Sometimes I think it’s more fun to be completely surprised by thrillers rather than guessing all the key reveals.

She admits that she’s going through Klonopin withdrawal. In the past, Frank calls Maya as she’s packing for college. She says she doesn’t think they should see each other and he asks for Aubrey’s number. Maya says she’ll ask Aubrey if that’s okay, and Frank accuses her of being jealous. I feel like he is the only one who might understand all this.

Before Instagram launched Stories, before the creator economy boomed into a billion-dollar industry, before influencers became experts, there was the viral craze of blogging. It's 2014, and a newly graduated Shelby Vanhoy launched a home decor and lifestyle blog titled Pretty in the Pines as she pondered what post-grad life looks like. On evenings and weekends, she updated her content with local travel recs, personal style advice, and apartment decorating tips.

Here’s where Marty meets up with Doc and, after a shootout over stolen plutonium, travels back in time to 1955 in the film’s now-iconic DeLorean. Upon arrival in the 1950s, he runs over one of the two pines on Mr. Peabody’s ranch, which somehow does not cause any horrible ripple effect. It just changes the mall’s name from Twin Pines to Lone Pine. HisDad's house (below) is located just to the north, at 1711Bushnell Ave. HisMom's house (above) is located at 1727Bushnell Ave., in South Pasadena.

The House in the Pines is a stand-alone psychological thriller. The House in the Pines is about a girl named Maya whose high school best friend, Aubrey, died mysteriously seven years ago. Maya goes to confront Frank and find out all the answers once and for all.

His mom turns out to be far less naive than Marty had thought, and thebully Biff ends up locking Marty in the trunk of a car. To get back to 1985, Marty has to back up the DeLorean all the way to Griffith Park in order to get up to 88 mph by the time he hits Courthouse Square. The street lamp he parks in front of is across from the Greek Theatre parking lot.

Enchantment Under the Sea dance (

It tried to be a Girl on the Train book and that I think is what left people confused and disappointed. It reminded me of The Shards which, similarly was a story about a teenage boy coming to terms with his sexuality who decides that this new kid at school murdered his boyfriend. His suspicions seem like a result of his own psychological struggles. To me it read like a very sad story of a girl coming to terms with the fact that a creepy older guy took advantage of her. The book never really resolves it in any rational way. Maya recalls (not sure if in the past or present) that her mom (Brenda) met her dad and his family on a church trip to Guatemala.

Her instability calls her interpretation of events into question, especially as she frequently doubts her own perception of reality. The week before 17-year-old Maya starts college, she witnessed the sudden and unexplained death of her best friend, Aubrey West. Though no one believed her, Maya thought her ex-boyfriend Frank was responsible.

What began as a fun side project for creative expression transitioned into a monetized social channel for interior design and DIY hacks. The OverDrive Read format of this ebook has professional narration that plays while you read in your browser. And coupled that with Maya’s memory loss of her moments with Frank—it truly is perplexing. The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes is an intriguing and suspenseful story about a woman’s search for the truth. Writing a book is hard and I do respect the work authors put in. If I could do it all again, I think I’d be a book editor.

The loss of her police officer father and the discovery of an abandoned car in a local lake raise chilling questions regarding a young woman’s family history. It would have been scarier, and the author wouldn’t have had to work so hard at the end to convince us that murder-by-hypnosis could actually be a thing. The way the book was, it just came off to me as weird and confusing, not scary. ‘The House in the Pines’ was originally published on January 3, 2023. Reese Witherspoon chose the mystery thriller as the first pick of Reese Book Club’s 2023 selections. The story is told both in the present timeline of Maya returning back to her hometown and also the past, leading up to Aubrey’s death.

Here’s where Marty’s mother lives circa 1955, and where the film’s oedipal subplot gets started when Marty interrupts the beginning of his parents’ courtship. Remember, it’s not okay to peep on anyone through binoculars as they’re getting changed, and George should not have been rewarded for it. Marty quickly arrives at Courthouse Square, the Universal City set where many of the downtown Hill Valley scenes were shot.

She even almost agreed when Frank asked her to move in with him. However, the spell broke when she realized she was missing hours of memory. She left the cabin covered in dirt, unsure of how it got there, and a sense that something was terribly wrong. When she was 17, Maya was about to leave Pittsfield to study English at Boston University, dreaming of fulfilling her father Jairo’s hopes of becoming a writer. Maya’s mother Brenda met Jairo on a monthlong mission trip to Guatemala; however, Jairo was killed later that month after protesting the Guatemalan Civil War. After returning to the US, Brenda learned that she was pregnant.

The Mystery

Brenda and Jairo fell in love and she got pregnant, but then he died, shot by the Guatemalan army. In any case, Maya is especially freaked out by the video because her best friend Aubrey also dropped dead for no apparent reason the summer before Maya went to college. It seems that now, parents are desperately wanting their children to be “unplugged” for a few weeks and take a much-needed break from screens and technology. Parents want to send their children to sleepaway camp so that their kids can enjoy being out in nature and socialize more in person without being on social media. Sleepaway camp — unlike at public and private schools — is one place for children where cell phones are not allowed.

Videos

Seeking answers, she heads to her Berkshire hometown to relive that fateful summer — the influence Frank once had on her and the obsessive jealousy that nearly destroyed her friendship with Aubrey. To save herself, Maya must understand a story written before she was born but time keeps running out and soon, all roads are leading back to Frank’s cabin. However, her past returns when she comes across a recent YouTube video in which a young woman suddenly keels over and dies in a diner while sitting across from none other than Frank. Plunged into the trauma that has defined her life, Maya heads to her Berkshires hometown to relive that fateful summer to finally solve the mystery of what happened to Aubrey.

Design Inspiration

In my spoiler-free review of House in the Pines, I talk about how I am going with option A, and I think the book is really more a book about recovery from trauma than a thriller. Maya tells her mom that she’s afraid to tell Dan about her drug addiction. Maya’s mom is worried about her daughter going off the drugs, as she says benzo withdrawal makes people paranoid.

Category: Suspense & Thriller Women's Fiction

Maya goes to urgent care and gets a prescription for a different antidepressant. Frank admits he had to kill Aubrey because she figured out his game AFTER he gave her a book on hypnosis. He says he “gave Cristina what she wanted” which was to die on camera.

Kindle Book

Reyes is also half Guatemalan, like Maya, who knows what it’s like to be abruptly cut off from her heritage. Small-town claustrophobia and intimacies alike propel this twist-filled psychological thriller. I love your review even though you gave way too much ink to book that did not deserve it. I can’t believe I actually read 70% of this POS before giving up.

Things That Didn’t Make Sense to Me About House in the Pines

In the past (?) or maybe it’s the present (?) Maya borrows her Mom’s car and sneaks out to Frank’s cabin at night. But she finds the cabin in ruins and Frank camping there. In the past, Maya goes to look for Frank at his parent’s house. His father is vague about where Frank is and Maya asks if he is at the cabin. Frank brought her there and said she was the only one he ever brought there.

This is a pet peeve of mine—it intrudes on the narrative and jolts the reader out of the story. Like that maybe her mom was in on it or was drugging her to keep her in hypnosis or something. I wish I had not wasted my time reading it and I am surprised it was on a popular bookclub reading list.

He asked her to defer college and live with him in the cabin forever. Main character Maya has insomnia and wonders how to get more Klonopin, which she’s been addicted to since the death of her best friend seven years ago. And, while many of the camp’s activities and traditions have remained the same for more than 80 years, all of the main buildings and cabins have been remodeled and upgraded over the years. Each cabin at Friendly Pines Camp now comes equipped with its own bathroom and shower.

I thought the author balanced both timelines well and it generally flowed nicely. But coping with her secret addiction and Klonopin withdrawal makes it difficult to trust her own mind. Even so, she dives headfirst into the trauma she tried to push away for so long, and she finally faces Frank—the strange boy with the cabin deep in the woods . I think this book could have been so interesting as a sort of magical realism/horror/trauma book but it never got there.

Maya gets off drugs and begins to work on finishing her father’s book. Apparently most people are NOT susceptible to hypnosis, but people with vivid imaginations (like artists and teenagers and, apparently, people who read a lot) are. Now Maya imagines she is with her father, who is typing his book.

She thought that Frank was a killer from the beginning and never changed her mind. The only thing that changed was that other people believed her. Yes, Aubrey and Christina are possibly victims of Frank, but Maya is his main victim.

In this captivating, eerie psychological thriller, Maya is haunted by gaps in her memories surrounding the death of her high school best friend nearly seven years ago. After watching a viral video of a young woman suddenly dying mysteriously in a diner, she’s desperate to put the pieces together. The House in the Pines (2023), a debut novel by Ana Reyes, is a psychological thriller that incorporates elements of magical realism and fairy tales. The novel began as Reyes’s MFA thesis at Louisiana State University; Reyes was inspired by her experience with Klonopin withdrawal and the mixed messages she received from various doctors. The novel also draws on Reyes’s cultural background—like her protagonist Maya, Reyes is part Guatemalan and grew up in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Here you’ll find a good selection of low-cost hostels and boutique hotels. With a wide variety of accommodations, this is where you will find great value not too far from the city. Some neighborhoods are better suited than others to certain activities. Or, maybe you want to be within walking distance of the best clubs and hottest bars. The best areas to stay in LA are spread across the city and each has its own character. In addition to the restaurants and shops, here you’ll find a wide variety of family-friendly activities, from the Santa Monica Pier to the Farmer’s Market. West Hollywood is one of the coolest and best places to stay in LA. It is one of the most fashionable parts of town known for its high-end boutiques and independent vintage shops. Here, you’ll also find a great variety of home décor stores and fabulous fitness studios. A great seaside location and hip décor are just two of the reason this stylish hostel is my top choice for where to stay in Venice Beach.

To get there, you’ll need to go by car but the colourful gay bars on Santa Monica and the world-famous clubs on Sunset Boulevard are best explored on foot. If you ask me where the best place to stay is, it’s Santa Monica. Santa Monica is a fabulous neighborhood located in western LA, and one of the best places to stay in LA by the beach. It perfectly combines the convenience of a busy city with the laid-back atmosphere of the beach. Grafton on Sunset is a luxurious and modern four-star hotel – and one of my recommendations for West Hollywood as well as favorite places to stay in LA.

This has got the highest concentration of trendy bars and clubs. You could stay at a hostel like Freehand and meet up with other partygoers when you hit the town. This hotel is my best recommendation for where to stay in Santa Monica. The hotel has free wifi, a modern gym, and its own lush golf course.
